Participating in Fundraising

We participate in fundraising for a local crisis center, A Safe Place. Located in Oakland, California, this bay area shelter is for those women and children whose lives have been affected by domestic violence.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Our spring philanthropy event is called called Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, in which teams of five compete in a relay type race around our block. The catch is, participates must compete in high heeled shoes, physically putting themselves in women's shoes and metaphorically putting themselves in women’s perspectives. This is a nationally registered event that our chapter has had the opportunity to host and make our own. Teams of men and women from across campus sign up for this special relay race, passing the heels to teammates after each lap. Following the event we hold a carnival in our porch, selling nachos, popcorn, soft drinks, cotton candy, and face painting, accompanied by good music and company of course. The goal of this event is to raise awareness for domestic violence and funds for our local crisis shelter, A Safe Place.

Congratulations to the 2015 Golden Shoe winners:

Sigma Chi and Alpha Omicron Pi!

Spooky Spaghetti

Our fall philanthropy event is Spooky Spaghetti, with all proceeds again benefiting A Safe Place. Every year around Halloween, Alpha Chi's don costumes and aprons and open our home for a spaghetti dinner that is nothing short of delicious! Women sell tickets to Cal community members and attendees arrive in costume, ready for a hearty meal and a good time! This event takes place during domestic violence month, and as well as raising funds, promotes awareness for our cause. Table centerpieces contain domestic violence facts, so each meal comes with a hearty dose of domestic violence education! We also encourage diners to sign our "These Hands Don't Hurt Pledge" and decorate a luminaria bag in solidarity.

External Involvement

One of the best parts about belonging to the Greek system is the support we get and give from other Greek houses! Just like we rely on other Greek organizations participating in our events, they rely on our support as well. It's a wonderful way to meet of members of our community, learn about their causes, and raise funds and awareness together. Here's a sampling of the many event our sisters participate in each year:

Sigma Chi's Derby Days Volleyball Tournament

ATOlympics

Panhellenic Olympus

Delta House of Pancakes photobooth
